![]() One word was clear, spoken in a voice that rang through her mind like a bell. I found The Light of the Oracle to be a fun, engaging read. It really does have all you'd need to make it a hard-to-put-down book. Hints of the Cinderella-type story are to be found here along with reluctant heroe and heroine. There's something to be said about a straight forward wondrously told tale of adventure, magic, good vs evil, curses, and more! Without taking us off-stage, Hanley manages to weave through her long-ago tale scenes that would resonate with today's teens.cliques, snubs, self-important folks wanting to have the power of the universe centered on them. I love fantasy/sci-fi and this is an exquisite read. I've read and delighted in her previous titles so was anxiously anticipating its publication. This is a companion to her two previous books The Seer and the Sword and The Healer's Keep. Hot off the press I received Victoria Hanley's new book, The Light of the Oracle. They would be gathered from all the towns and villages and brought to my palace in wagon-loads. Another audiobook I did last summer - the idyllic 'Cider with Rosie'. When I finally became King (I used to think) I would command a parade of grandmas, and drill them, and march them up and down - rank upon rank of hobbling boots, nodding bonnets, flying shawls, and furious chewing faces. Those severe and similar old bodies enthralled me when they dressed that way. They looked like starlings, flecked with jet, and they walked in a tinkle of darkness. ![]() ![]() They wore high laced boots and long muslin dresses, beaded chokers and candlewick shawls, crowned by tall poke bonnets tied with trailing ribbons and smothered with inky sequins. And our two old neighbours, when setting forth on errands, always prepared themselves scrupulously so. The grandmothers of those days dressed for the part in that curious but endearing uniform which is now known to us only through music-hall. It’s a surprisingly sad tale, not simply the story of a world. “Granny Trill and Granny Wallon were traditional ancients of a kind we won’t see today, the last of that dignity of grandmothers to whom age was its own embellishment. There is an almost terrible yearning that runs through Cider With Rosie, which was published in 1959 when Lee was in his forties. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Her writing became her grip on sanity, and Shelley never wavered from his belief in her creative genius - as she believed in his. It was in Italy that they found their spiritual home, their 'paradise of exiles', but it was also there that the loss of her children nearly broke Mary's spirit. They moved constantly throughout England, Switzerland and Italy, escaping creditors, censorious families and ill health. Shelley was little help - his unconventional attitudes to love strained her devotion to its limits. During the nine turbulent years Mary and Shelley were together, Claire was the ever-present third, whose manipulative behaviour often drove Mary to despair. ![]() It was much harder to cope with her jealousy of Claire, her step-sister, who had run away with them and was also in love with Shelley. When she eloped with Shelley, Mary had been quite prepared to suffer condemnation from society. The novel was conceived in a contest with him and Lord Byron to tell ghost stories. Sometimes Corson’s effort to cast similarities between the lobsters and the humans that love lobsters is a little clunky. Not enough to quit grad school and become a lobster scientist, but enough to think about lobsters more than I ever would have before. In some ways it is funny to read about the humans’ obsessions, but by the time I finished the book I found myself also wanting to know the answers to their questions. Corson uses characters to drive the story, doing funny and accurate profiles of various lobstermen, their families, and scientists that are passionate about the lobsters. ![]() The main narrative mystery of the story is trying to figure out what is happening with the fluctuating lobster population near the Cranberry Islands. But Corson’s book is so good that in the end I found myself both entertained by the story and invested in discovering the hidden secrets of the lobster. ![]() I have to admit, I wouldn’t have picked up The Secret Life of Lobsters by Trevor Corson if it wasn’t one of the required books for my literary journalism class because the topic - lobsters and the people that love them - isn’t something I would normally read about. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() With our large selection of high-interest titles, we can help you stock your classroom, library, or reading programs with great books up to 90% off the list price!
